Best Family Days Out in Tring

A free-to-enter (or cheap) museum of extraordinary stuffed animals, four reservoirs and a manor with grounds: Tring over-indexes on children’s days out.

NHM Tring is the unique offer. Pendley and the reservoirs share the rest. It is a better family town than its size suggests.

Check museum booking rules before you promise the cases of zebras.

A day that survives rain, a budget, and a child who is finished 40 minutes early.

Ashridge Estate

Monument Drive, near Aldbury · Berkhamsted

The essential Dacorum landscape. Start at the monument or at Aldbury, pick a colour of mud, and accept that summer Saturdays are communal. Bluebells in spring are famous for a reason; so are the car parks that fill by 10am.

02

Natural History Museum at Tring

Akeman Street, Tring · Tring

The most surprising museum in Hertfordshire sits on Akeman Street. Cases of animals collected by a Victorian who kept zebras. Children go quiet. Adults remember that Tring was a Rothschild town. Check current ticketing; it has not always been a walk-up.

03

Tring Reservoirs

Startops End, Marsworth / Tring · Tring

Dug for the canal, kept for the birds. Start at Startops End, pack binoculars if you have them, and budget longer than you think. Combine with a pint in Tring on the way home.

Aldbury village and pond

The Green, Aldbury · Tring

Aldbury is almost too photogenic, which is why you should still go, just not at 11am on a bank holiday if you need a parking space. Walk up to the monument or stay on the green. The pubs work harder than the film crews.
