Ashridge Estate
Five thousand acres of Chiltern woodland, a canal duke’s monument, and the walk that defines western Dacorum.
Ashridge sits on the Chiltern scarp north of Berkhamsted, spilling into Buckinghamshire. The National Trust looks after the woods and commons; the house at Little Gaddesden is a separate story.
Start at the Bridgewater Monument if you want the postcard and a climb. Start at Golden Valley if you want deer and fewer selfie sticks. Start in Aldbury if you want a pond, a pint and a hill that earns lunch.
Spring is bluebells. Autumn is beech. Winter is the honest season, when the estate belongs to people who own decent boots. Summer Saturdays are communal: accept it or come at 8am.
There is no single ‘best’ circuit. A reliable family loop is monument–woods–return in about two hours, with the NT cafe as a bribe. A longer line walks the ridge toward Ivinghoe Beacon, which is outside the borough and inside every photographer’s camera roll.
