Berkhamsted Castle
A Norman motte beside the station: free, ruined, and still the key to the valley.
Berkhamsted Castle was built to control the London–Midlands route after 1066. Robert of Mortain likely oversaw it; Thomas Becket later expanded it. What you visit now is earthwork, flint and imagination.
English Heritage keeps it free to enter. Children treat the motte as a playground; historians treat the moats as the point. Either way, it is three minutes from the platform.
Pair it with the canal towpath toward The Boat and a High Street return. That is the Berkhamsted starter kit, and it still works in the rain.
