Grand Union Canal
Dacorum’s other high street: locks, mills, pubs and a towpath commute.
The Grand Union enters Dacorum at Kings Langley, becomes Apsley’s marina, slips through Boxmoor, puts on a show at Berkhamsted and climbs toward the Tring summit.
Cycle it if you have decent tyres. Walk Apsley to Berkhamsted if you have a pub budget. The Paper Mill, The Boat and the Port of Berkhamsted sign are the obvious stops; the quieter miles around Nash Mills are the ones you will remember.
The canal is also a planning document in water: moorings, waterside flats, and the slow-motion restoration of the Wendover Arm. Our news desk covers those fights; this guide is for the afternoon you actually go.
