Historic places

Castle, priory traces, a royal village, a New Town landscape, a Rothschild museum.

Berkhamsted Castle is the headline ruin. Kings Langley held a royal palace; almost nothing stands, which does not stop the village wearing the story. Ashridge was a medieval college, then a royal nursery, then a ducal house.

Hemel’s history is also 1947: the New Town, Jellicoe, the neighbourhood principle. Treating only timber frames as heritage is how you misread this borough.

Markyate Cell, Tring’s Rothschild buildings, and the paper mills of Apsley complete a map that is more interesting than a single castle afternoon.
