Tring Reservoirs
Four lakes on the canal summit: herons, hides and a long, level walk.
Wilstone, Startops, Marsworth and Tringford were excavated to keep the Grand Union in water at its Chiltern summit. They are now an SSSI and one of the borough’s quiet glories.
Park at Startops End or walk from Tring station along the towpath (it is further than you want it to be, and better). Hides reward patience. Dogs and birders negotiate an unspoken treaty that occasionally fails.
The Aylesbury and Wendover arms peel off here. If you are even slightly interested in how England moved coal and grain, this landscape will get its hooks in.
