Living in Berkhamsted
A Chiltern market town with a castle, a serious high street and a station that makes London feel close.
Living here
Berkhamsted occupies the Bulbourne valley: canal, railway and High Street stacked in a narrow floor, housing climbing the sides.
Northchurch is the western continuation, not quite a separate town in daily life. The surrounding countryside is Chilterns AONB, which is why people pay for it.
Expect independent shops, buggies, and a civic culture that writes to the council in full sentences.
Schools
Ashlyns School is the state secondary. Berkhamsted School is the large independent. Several well-regarded primaries sit on both sides of the valley.
Catchment and siblings dominate. Moving ‘for the school’ is a local sport; check HCC admissions, not a Facebook anecdote.
Healthcare
GPs in the town; the community hospital offer has thinned over the years. Watford General remains the A&E.
Hemel UTC is closer than Watford for many minor injuries.
Dentists
Admiral House and other practices on or near the High Street. NHS lists are often closed; join them anyway.
GPs
Town-centre and Northchurch surgeries. Register early; Berkhamsted lists are not infinitely elastic.
Transport
Berkhamsted station to Euston is the town’s superpower. Fast trains exist; so do the days they do not.
The A4251 through the High Street crawls. The A41 bypass is how you actually leave. Buses to Hemel and Tring are useful until they are not, after 7pm.
Parking
Waitrose, Lower Kings Road and canal-side car parks. High Street on-street is not a strategy.
Station parking fills with commuters. Cycle if you can; the valley is kinder than it looks.
Shopping
The High Street is the point: GAIL’s, independents, Waitrose, pharmacies, the Rex. Use it or watch it thin.
Restaurants

Mosques
No large mosque in town. Hemel and Watford are the usual journeys; some families use St Albans.
Churches
St Peter’s on the High Street is the landmark. Other denominations meet in halls and the surviving chapels.
Parks
The castle grounds, canal, Butts Meadow, Ashridge a short drive or a long walk.
Things to do
Castle, canal, Ashridge, Rex Cinema, High Street wandering that counts as a day out.
Local services
Berkhamsted library, town council, leisure centre. Hemel still holds most borough services.
