Hemel Hempstead Hospital is not an A&E: and visitors still get caught out
The Urgent Treatment Centre runs 8am to 10pm. Major emergencies go to Watford General. That split has been true for years. It still needs repeating.
Hemel Hempstead Hospital remains a working NHS site: clinics, some inpatient services, and an Urgent Treatment Centre. It is not a 24-hour accident and emergency department. West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust sends major trauma, strokes and blue-light emergencies to Watford General.
The UTC is typically open from 8am to 10pm for injuries and illnesses that cannot wait for a GP but do not need a full emergency department. NHS 111 can book you into it. Turning up at 11pm with a chest pain story is the wrong door.
This is not a new reconfiguration, which is why it is easy for newcomers: and for some long-term residents: to remember an older map. Our relocation guides put the hospital, GP lists and dental access in one place, because ‘moving to Hemel’ searches still assume a district general hospital with a full A&E.
If you are unsure, call 111. If it is life-threatening, call 999. The Magic Roundabout is not a clinical algorithm.
